Update #31

Monday, January 30, 2012
Rehab docs just came in and said that chase is doing amazing. They are going to up his therapies today and see how he does. If it's too much, then they will pull back. However, the goal is to get him up to 3 hours per day so that he can switch from the Medical Team to the Therapy Team.

They are also starting him on a med that helps his muscles release the rigidity so that he can start moving more.

The meds are so cool because as he gets going with therapy - they can see what muscles are more rigid, spasming and pulling. Then, there are different meds that can focus on each body part - to help it relax so that it can re-train/learn how to function.

Chase is continuing to try to speak - and some nurses have told me that they believed that they heard words. His speech will come, just not yet. He is really taking direction well. In other words, he can settle himself down if he's comforted. The dr's say that's huge because for his overall progress, he is re-learning how to manage his body on his own.

Chase has his "swallow test" today which will be an x-ray that watches his swallow as he eats and drinks. There are 4 phases of swallowing and staff just wants to ensure that there is not s potential of aspirating - both regularly and "silently." With silent aspiration, it would just be going into his lungs without coughing etc. That test is at 12:30 and it's a huge deal that they think he is ready.

We continue to be amazed how much we can feel the love and prayers. His room has such a sweet spirit and he is truly being carried - as well as the rest of us. I feel such a peace and calmness and feel so grateful, humbled and blessed by the continual love & support from our precious family and friends.

Yesterday, as Justin and I sat quietly together at chase's bedside, we reflected to the Sunday just two weeks before. We are astonished by his progress and spirit. He is such a good boy; so tolerant and strong. He is beginning to understand the situation and when we asked him if he felt peace in his heart, he told us yes. Our sweet boy is being comforted by the Holy Ghost. I know he has a testimony of the gospel and of the power of prayer.

I still remember when chase was just 5. My mom had lost her keys. He went up to my mom and tugged on her shirt, saying, "Grandma, when I lose something, I say a prayer to find it." it was such a sweet moment that showed Chase's faith and character. He is a valiant missionary and doesn't doubt. I know that he will come through this situation changed, just as our sweet family is. He continues to amaze me and teach me daily.

Thank you so much again for the love, support and prayers. We feel them; we know they are a large part of chase's recovery. We know that without the power from above - Chase would most likely not be here. We are so grateful that we have the support and love from our friends and family. Thank you.

Slow and steady,

Jen
